A Presentation by Alan Journet for the Engineers for a Sustainable Future, December 10th 2024
We are frequently reminded that the best way to communicate information about the climate crisis is through stories. As a faculty member in Biology and Environmental Science at Southeast Missouri State University, I spent many years teaching General Ecology. One section of the course deals with Community Ecology and explores the structure, function and distribution of natural ecosystems (biomes). My awakening to the threat of global warming and its climate change consequences to these natural ecosystems involves teaching this segment of the course. As I outline in tis presentation, the current ‘Business As Usual’ scenario for greenhouse gas emissions suggests we pose a major threat to the ongoing existence of these ecosystems around the globe, and along with the biodiversity they comprise, our threat to our agriculture, forestry and fisheries.
This is one of the stories I often use when discussing the dimensions of the climate crisis.
