Why is Electricity a Superior Energy Source?

What is Oregon Doing?

HB2021

Critical Infrastructure Hub

  • The Hub comprises tanks that store 90% of Oregon’s liquid fuel and all the jet fuel used by the International Airport; most of the tanks were built in the 1950s.
  • These tanks are located on a substrate (soil) that will probably simply liquefy in the event of a sever seismic event causing their contents to escape into the surrounding community and nearby river.
  • A high likelihood that the Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake will strike within a few decades is rising.
  • Should the earthquake occur and destroy the hub, the environmental damage and greenhouse gas emissions will be devastating.
  • Oregon Senate Bill 1567 (2022) drew attention to the problem, but the threat tells us it’s time to do more.

Types of Renewable Energy

Offshore Wind

Kinetic energy of wind converted into electricity by wind turbines.

Solar

The sun’s energy turned into electricity heat energy by solar panels / solar heaters.

Biomass

Energy obtained from plant & animal remains; e.g. burning wood produces heat energy.

Geothermal Energy

Heat energy trapped underneath the earth’s crust converted into electricity by steam turbines.

Ocean Energy

Oceanic thermal and tidal energy converted into electricity by turbines.

Hydropower

Gravitational potential energy of water converted into electrical energy through a hydraulic turbine.
