While emissions from factories, vehicles, and power plants often dominate the conversation, the products we buy—and the systems that produce them—are major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions. From fast fashion to single-use plastics, consumption accounts for a significant portion of our carbon footprint. In fact, studies estimate that up to 60% of global emissions are indirectly linked to household consumption patterns. Every product has a carbon story—how it’s made, how it’s transported, and what happens after we discard it. Understanding this lifecycle helps us shift from unconscious consumption to climate-aware choices.
The Power of Individual Purchasing Decisions
Every purchase is a vote. When we choose to buy sustainably produced goods, we are supporting systems that prioritize environmental integrity over short-term gain. Consumers wield considerable influence over supply chains—companies respond to demand. Choosing energy-efficient appliances, zero-waste products, or plant-based foods sends a clear market signal. Moreover, reducing unnecessary consumption—buying less but better—is one of the most effective strategies to lower personal emissions. In the climate fight, our dollars are tools of change.
Buy Local, Cut Carbon
One of the most overlooked climate actions is buying local. Transporting goods over long distances—often referred to as “food miles”—adds substantial carbon emissions to products. Local purchases reduce the need for long-haul freight, support local economies, and keep dollars circulating within the community. When we buy from local farms, artisans, and businesses, we’re not just reducing emissions—we’re investing in climate resilience. From farmers markets to local repair shops, small decisions aggregate into large-scale impact.
Conscious Consumption and Sustainability
Sustainable consumption is about more than recycling—it’s about shifting how we value goods, time, and resources. Embracing circular economy principles—reuse, repair, refurbish—helps minimize waste and extend the life of products. Clothing swaps, tool libraries, and secondhand markets are excellent examples of how community-based consumption reduces emissions and builds connection. Living sustainably doesn’t mean living without—it means living intentionally, aligning our values with our purchasing power to build a healthier, more just world.
Redefining Prosperity in a Climate-Conscious Age
The conversation around consumption isn’t about guilt—it’s about agency. In a system that often encourages disposable culture, reclaiming control over what and how we consume is a radical act. The climate-positive shift starts with questions: Do I need this? Can I get it locally? Who made it—and how? A livable climate future will depend on this recalibration, one that prioritizes quality over quantity, community over convenience, and sustainability over status quo. With every choice, we shape the economy—and the atmosphere.

What is my Connection to Local Food Systems?

There is a saying: Nature bats last. One reason why that is very true is that every man, woman and child eats, and people have not yet figured out how to eat plastic and survive, so by shrinking the amount of living things, we are shrinking our source of food supply. Somehow, we need to help connect the dots in everyone’s mind, that soil depletion is a real concern, and that overgrowth is a real issue. Ensuring our ability to feed ourselves and also protecting and restoring the living world should be a priority.
Some people are concerned about unintended consequences of any possible geo-engineering schemes, and it needs to be acknowledged that they are right to be concerned. But we also need to acknowledge that the entire industrial revolution since its inception has turned out to be the biggest act of geo-engineering – every car, ship and plane, every piece of plastic. We and our grandchildren are and will be experiencing the results.
There have been food movements that have created the initial path, like the Slow Food Movement, the Transition Movement which promotes local resilience, and the organic movement as well as the vegetarian and vegan movement. It is true that people’s relationship to food covers a wide spectrum. There are those who live to eat, and those who eat to live – big difference. There are those with eating disorders, and those who use and perceive food as acts of love and kindness. Indeed, the two biggest bookseller genres – when people still bought books – were cookbooks and diet books.
The point is, we are all in this together, and therefore everyone matters. You matter because you’re connected to your family and your community. One question to ask yourself, how strong is that connection? Connections are like library cards. Some library cards are rarely used, and some get used to tap into all sorts of stories, information and activity. Ask yourself – how might it feel – if that library card of connection were to get used more, what would that be like? There could be great people, great food and new experiences. One thing that has held true over time is that communities with strong connections recover better and faster from crises. Therefore, building community is building resilience, and that will be needed in a climate change future.
So, I think I correctly chose the content and the message for this class, which will cover some of the local farms, some of the food related issues of the local region, some ways that each of us can help reduce food waste, make more sustainable choices and help our local region thrive. Hopefully, people will become more curious about where their food comes from and about the impact that our collective food system has on Nature.

Video: What’s Up With Composting? In the 2021-22 school year Rogue Valley Farm to School launched a school- based composting program at Talent and Phoenix Elementary Schools in southern Oregon. The program tied into the Digging Deeper School Partnership that connects students to local farms and garden education. Students learn about reducing food waste while turning their lunch leftovers into nutrient-rich compost that can be used on the farm and back in their school garden beds.

The Rogue Valley Farm Tour is self-guided, so you can go to whichever farms you want and stay for as long as you’d like during the event. The event will be held on Sunday, July 20, 2025 from 10am to 3pm. Some locations will be open late, as indicated in the brochure.
Participating farms and ranches are included in the annual event brochure, which includes a map of the participating locations. Event brochures will be available at various locations throughout the valley, and a digital brochure is available to view or download to your mobile device.

The Rogue Valley stands at a pivotal moment in reshaping our food landscape—where what we eat, how it’s grown, and who has access to it all matters. This new five-year plan, shaped by the voices of over 2,000 community members and grounded in local knowledge, offers a clear path toward a food system that is equitable, sustainable, and resilient.
The Action Plan is rooted in the findings of the Rogue Valley Community Food Assessment, a region-wide effort to better understand the current state of our food system. The assessment identified key challenges and opportunities—from food access and farm viability to resource stewardship and waste—and laid the foundation for meaningful, community-driven solutions.
Planting Resilience: How Growing Food Cuts Emissions and Builds Community
Food hasn’t always been as abundant as it is today. During the Dust Bowl of the 1930s—an environmental disaster driven by unsustainable farming—nothing grew. With the nation gripped by the Great Depression, families struggled not just economically but nutritionally. That struggle was echoed during the world wars, when Victory Gardens became a patriotic duty and a practical way to stretch rations. These historical moments remind us that the ability to grow food is more than a hobby—it’s a form of resilience. And in today’s climate-constrained world, that resilience is more relevant than ever.
Growing your own fruits and vegetables is a climate-smart act. It cuts out emissions from long-distance transportation, refrigeration, packaging, and synthetic fertilizers. Every zucchini grown at home is one less flown in from thousands of miles away. Beyond emissions, gardening teaches patience, interdependence, and gratitude for the resources behind every bite. When neighbors garden together—in community plots, front-yard conversions, or school greenhouses—they also rebuild something we’ve lost: localized trust, shared knowledge, and climate resilience. These spaces become more than places to grow food—they become places to grow community.
In a world rocked by supply chain shocks, extreme weather, and rising costs, the humble act of planting a seed is nothing short of revolutionary. It’s a step toward regenerative living, where sustainability is practiced, not just preached. When we grow our own food, we reduce our climate footprint—but more importantly, we root ourselves in shared purpose. Gardening teaches us that abundance isn’t about excess—it’s about what we nurture and share. In the soil, in the sun, and in each other, we rediscover the tools for a livable future.
Reducing Plastic Use Is Climate Action
What so bad about plastics?
Plastic pollution is usually framed as a waste management crisis—but it’s also a significant contributor to climate change. From extraction to disposal, plastics generate emissions at every step. Most are made from fossil fuels—specifically natural gas and petroleum—and the refining and manufacturing processes are highly carbon-intensive. In fact, if plastic were a country, it would be the fifth-largest emitter of greenhouse gases globally. And the problem doesn’t end at production: as plastics break down in landfills or the ocean, they continue to emit methane and ethylene, two potent greenhouse gases. That shiny wrapper or clamshell container? It carries an invisible carbon toll.
Every piece of plastic avoided is a small but meaningful strike against a carbon-heavy system. Swapping single-use packaging for reusables, compostables, or bulk-buying strategies not only keeps waste out of waterways but also curbs upstream emissions. Choosing products with minimal or no packaging—especially from local producers—cuts out an entire layer of pollution. It’s a reminder that waste is never just waste—it’s energy, extraction, and emissions embedded in every item. Addressing the plastic crisis isn’t just about tidier landscapes—it’s about drawing down our carbon footprint, one choice at a time.
These greedy, corrupt corporations needed another way to make money from squeezing every drop of oil out of our planet, so they turned to plastic as the next big source of revenue for their filthy schemes.
