MEDFORD, Ore. – The recent dismissal of hundreds of experts tasked with writing the nation’s foremost climate report is a dangerous denial of science that hinders Southern Oregon’s ability to prepare for critical threats like worsening wildfires, according to a local climate action leader.
Alan Journet, co-facilitator of Southern Oregon Climate Action Now (SOCAN), condemned the Trump administration’s decision to remove the authors of the upcoming 6th National Climate Assessment (NCA). Mandated by Congress since 1990 and released every four years, the NCA provides essential region-specific data on climate change impacts, including those affecting the Pacific Northwest’s snowfall, seasonal patterns, and wildfire risk, Journet explained. “Without these kinds of projections, then we don’t know what the future is likely to hold,” he said.
