The Trump administration announced last week they’re closing the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), which is described in this article in Yale Climate Connections as “one of the world’s premier institutions for studying the atmosphere in all its variety and complexity”. 

Dr. Daniel Swain posted on Blue Sky that “Nearly all weather, climate, & natural hazard research involves NCAR in some way-either directly (as is the case with countless affiliated scientists at universities or elsewhere) or indirectly (through use of NCAR’s irreplaceable community datasets, predictive models, or its computing facilities).

Dr. Katherine Hayhoe posted on Blue Sky that “Dismantling NCAR is like taking a sledgehammer to the keystone holding up our scientific understanding of the planet.”Maybe the most disturbing piece in the YCC article is that the closure seems to be politically motivated to get back at Colorado for their handling of a case related to Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

So, please join me in writing our respective Congressional representatives to fight against this administration’s war on science, which not only hurts the basic understanding of our physical world, but also has dramatic impacts to our safety now and in the future.
