Corals Past Tipping Point!
As those of you who know me, this issue is personal for me. I’ve dived on spectacularly beautiful coral reefs and on dying and dead coral reefs.
The difference is heartbreaking. Unfortunately while previous IPCC reports projected that shallow warm water corals were under threat from warmer water, this just released Global Tipping Points Report, 2025 indicates that with our average tropical sea surface temperatures now elevated by 1.4ºC or more beyond historic levels, these reefs are crossing or have crossed their critical tipping points. The chances that I’ll be able to show my grandkids flourishing coral reefs are shrinking every year.
The report discusses other tipping points, most negative (for humans and the ecosystem) but some positive (e.g. northeastern Pacific kelp beds).
So, we need to redouble our efforts to transition to non-carbon based fuels ASAP, which means following the science – and the economics.
Please write your national and state senators and representatives and demand policies supporting energy sources that give next generations a healthier planet than the trajectory we’re currently on.
