Will US science survive Trump 2.0?
The title of today’s article in Nature Will US science survive Trump 2.0? tells the whole shocking and disheartening story. “In just the first three months of his second term, Trump has destabilized eight decades of government support for science. His administration has fired thousands of government scientists, terminated swathes of research grants across disciplines and threatened to slash billions in funding from US research universities. This looks likely to be just the beginning …”
Last month, 1,900 members of the US NASEM, published an open letter, declaring: “We are sending this SOS to sound a clear warning: the nation’s scientific enterprise is being decimated.” Prior to his inauguration Trump claimed that he would “unleash scientific breakthroughs, ensure America’s technological dominance, and usher in a Golden Age of American Innovation!” Instead he’s “destabilized eight decades of government support for science.”
So, please write, call, visit your Senators and Congressional Representatives and demand they protect science funding and support. If that doesn’t happen, we’ll be world leaders in technologies of the 1890’s to 1910’s early oil boom rather than the 21st Century Clean Energy/Medical/AI/Tech boom.
