Climate and biodiversity intrinsically linked
Today a good friend shared with me this short (17 minute) video by Johan Rockstrom that resonated strongly for me as we all watch the conflagrations destroying so much in Los Angeles. Seeing the apocalyptic scenes, makes me (AGAIN!) have to ask, what will be enough for people to wake up to the causes and consequences of our overheating planet and take concrete actions?
Dr. Rockstrom’s graphic shows 1.2ºC change* as of 2022 yet 2023 was 1.47ºC and 2024 was 1.57ºC, per Copernicus. Fortunately, the 5-year average including 2024 is 1.35ºC, still not above 1.5ºC objective, so we have something to shoot for. But things are going in the wrong direction.

We need to recognize that we humans are one species and part of the biosphere rather than act as many competing and conflicting groups separate from one another and all other living things. But the oil and gas companies are “drill baby drill”, reject real action on climate change, and embrace (revere) unbridled greed, which is a recipe for disaster. If we want a future for other generations, we need a new paradigm.
Most indigenous people embrace humans as an integral part of the web of life. Robin Kimmerer, author, botanist, and Potawatomi tribal member wrote Braiding Sweetgrass in which she discusses having her feet in two worlds. She asks the reader to imagine a world of appreciation rather than greed. Once we appreciate nature and biodiversity we will act to protect it, and per Dr. Rockstrum, have a chance to let subsequent generations have a sustainable and habitable world.
