Nine states inked an agreement to accelerate heat pump adoption to cut emissions and support cleaner homes

February 7, 2024 – As jurisdictions across the country look for ways to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from buildings, 9 states signed a new agreement to accelerate the adoption of heat pump technologies HVAC and water heating systems in homes. The agreement, coordinated by NESCAUM, sets a new goal of achieving 65% market penetration for heat pumps by 2030 and 90% by 2040, and facilitates regional and cross-state collaboration. The signatory states include California, Colorado, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Rhode Island.

The Building Decarbonization Coalition and the undersigned Coalition members in the manufacturing sector issued the following statements:

“We applaud these 9 states for crafting an agreement that takes an ambitious, flexible, and pragmatic approach to building decarbonization.”
