100th Annual Meeting of the Pacific Division of AAAS

Ashland, Oregon – June 18-22, 2019 “Think Globally, Organize Regionally, Act Locally”

Complete Meeting Program

Introduction

The American Association for the Advancement of Science is one of the preeminent multi-disciplinary professional scientific organization in the nation, if not the world. Notable among its activities is publication of the prestigious peer-reviewed weekly journal Science.

In June, the AAAS (Pacific Division) is meeting at Southern Oregon University in Ashland, with a program designed to mix scientists with the interested public in discussions on the policy implications of science, with a special emphasis on the areas of environment and climate change. For this reason, Southern Oregon Climate Action Now is collaborating with the Pacific Division, serving as a sponsor, and contributing to several symposia.

Not surprisingly, we are also encouraging SOCAN activists and supporters to consider joining the general public in engaging with the scientists by participating in sessions of the conference and related activities.

The meeting will start with an opening reception and presentation at 4 pm on Tuesday June 18th held at the Schneider Art Museum on the Southern Oregon University Campus and will take place over the next three days (June 19, 20, 21). The meeting includes a ‘Science Pub Crawl’ in downtown Ashland on the evening of the 19th, and an annual banquet at Science Works in Ashland on the evening of June 20th. The meeting also includes a series of field trips scheduled for Saturday June 22.

Meeting Focus

This year’s meeting will place a particular emphasis on the unique scientific, cultural and environmental features as well as the challenges facing Southern Oregon, Northern California, and the Pacific Northwest in general. There will, for example, be a special emphasis on the environmental and agricultural riches of this region as well as the local consequences of environmental issues including climate change. The climate change component of the meeting will include sessions on expected impact including local and regional adaptations, as well as a specific consideration of how scientists and scientific information can influence local and regional climate policy.
